would it be possible to pull testing's 4.0.6 version to stable?
It seems to work fine in a Jessie environment, as I figured out when I installed 4.0.6 after 4.0.3 had ruined some 48 bit scans... I can confirm that installing the debian Stretch version (libtiff5_4.0.6-2_amd64.deb) fixes the problem on Jessie.
